Courageous Joy as I Bow

This is an Flip camera-video of a talk that I gave on March 24th, 2012 for a women’s retreat. It is about 50 minutes long.  The theme for the retreat was “Courageous Joy as I Bow,” and my portion focused on gifts. During another portion of the day, I read the book The Giving Tree and summarized O’Henry’s short story, “The Gift of the Magi.”  The video begins a few minutes into my talk, so I am explaining how both of these stories contribute to some of our misconceptions about gifts and giving by portraying sacrificial giving as depleting. While these stories are sweet, they reinforce our cultural belief that giving leaves the giver in a stump-like, hairless, and watch-less state; mildly happy, but ultimately diminished.
