How to find Rest

Remember how in the last post I said I was tired? Well, I have been. And I’ve been a little depressed too. I think some of it is the September blues, but I also think that maybe I’ve been falling into my tendency to think that if I just get everything done, organized, scheduled, planned, and prepared, well then, I will have peace and rest. Right?  Then I will feel rested, at peace, sane, and of course, the huge H.  HAPPY.

Because you know, I’m just always so on top of my game that with a smidgeon of elbow grease I manage to do it, all by my Big-self.

I suppose that when all the kids got started with school and the ball of autumn got rolling, it kind of rolled right by me. And I haven’t managed to get everything done, organized, scheduled, planned, and prepared. Not even a little bit

Meanwhile, my kids and I are walking around the house humming our M-verse song.

M verse is comes from Psalm 62: 1-2  My soul finds rest in God alone. My salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress. I will never be shaken. (Click the verse to get a PDF printable of the verse.)

We had been working on this for a few weeks before I realized that I’m supposed to be finding my rest for my soul IN GOD ALONE.  My kitchen will be trashed. My menu plan will be a joke. My 3 year old will kick me in the ribs when I try to wrestle her onto the potty.  My day to day life and circumstances are inevitably going to be a continuous mess, probably for the next umpteen years, but that doesn’t mean my soul can’t be unshakably fortified in the security of my God, and my salvation.

Moreover, the same is true for my kids. I’m doing them a fat, stinking disservice if I’m teaching them that their security is in me. That’s not to say that I don’t want them to have confidence in our family, my marriage, and our love for them, but I want them to know that THEIR SOULS FIND REST IN GOD ALONE.

And, I want you to know that too.  I want you to memorize this verse.
Okay, Addie, bring it home. (Once again, beware the swaying if you have any motion sickness issues. Click over to the blog to watch the videos if you are in e-mail or a reader.)

If you’d like to hear the “official” version of this song, it comes from Seeds Family Worship. You can stream all their songs online here, and find M-verse on Seeds of Courage, Track 8.

But I found this cool video by a blogger, Home with the Boys, and she features this song along with some great homeschool-y type ideas to go with memorizing it.

Okay, so back to business. It’s been a while since we’ve done Letter Verses, but FAR BE IT FROM ME to abandon the alphabet at M, so short of our goal.  (If you have no clue about Letter Verses, they are scripture verses put to music that help us

  • Memorize God’s Word
  • Draw our attention to the needs of those without God’s Word.

Since there are 26 letters in the alphabet, we give $26 a month to OneVerse, an organization that facilitates Bible translation.  The cost of translation of one verse of scripture is $26.  You can partner with the Letter Verses group in meeting our goal of funding the translation for 26 verses for the Vidunda people in Tanzania, East Africa. We are almost half way to our goal AND we are almost halfway through the alphabet.  (Check out the other Letter Verses and videos using the tab above.) Nevermind that it is taking us inordinately longer than I intended to finish the alphabet.  You see, our souls have rest, so we’ll finish it. 🙂

SO, how are your letter verses going? What letter are you on? Any suggestions for N verse?

PS: If you have been a lazy-dazy and have NEVER clicked over to the OneVerse site, seriously, do it. As you know, I don’t whole-heartedly advocate for much around here, but $26 a month is chump change for giving the word of God to others who DO NOT HAVE IT.

  1. You managed to sum up exactly how i have been feeling lately. I made a huge to-do list for myself and it seems like for every item I check off three are added… Spring cleaning never happened and Fall is upon us. School started and I feel like we are living minute-to-minute. So, I am going to start the letter verses with my children! I have dreamed of homeschooling, hoped to bring them up as wonderful perfect children, and prayed that they just turn out alright despite having me for a mom. If I just remember to turn to Him, it will be alright!

Please keep blogging. I have never been great with words. You seem to write exactly what I need to hear!

    Thank you!!

  2. Thank you for this. I had a terrible day trying to “get everything done”, not paying enough attention to my family, and leaving the kids with my husband so I could “just finish this”. At the end of the day I felt awful and I didn’t know why. Then your post came up in my Facebook feed. And it made me cry. Thank you for opening my eyes. This was exactly what I needed to hear.

  3. Thank you for your reminder on rest in God alone and thank you for writing you heart on your blog. I will be praying for you. And I am currently finding myself trying to get it all done but behind.
